When you complete the Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) course, you can obtain a professional license. This license lets you work legally on aircraft. In India, the authority that gives this license is the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Not every AME college lets you get a license. Only colleges approved by DGCA are valid for issuing AME license eligibility.
AME licenses are divided into different categories. Each category lets you work on specific aircraft types or systems. These include:
Category A (Light Aircraft)
You can maintain small and light aircraft.
This is a basic license for small planes.
Good start for beginners.
Category B1 (Mechanical License)
This is one of the most common licenses.
B1 lets you work on engine, airframe, landing gear, and mechanical systems.
There are sub-types:
B1.1: Heavy aircraft with jet engines
B1.2: Light aircraft with piston engines
B1.3: Helicopters with jet engines
B1.4: Helicopters with piston engines.
Category B2 (Avionics License)
This license focuses on electronics and avionics systems.
You can work on navigation, radio, communication, and electrical systems.
Some colleges also prepare you for EASA licenses (European Aviation Safety Agency). These are accepted in many countries outside India too. This can improve your job chances abroad.
To obtain any AME license:
You must join a DGCA-approved AME college like those in Delhi NCR.
You need to complete the required course hours and practical training.
After the course, you must pass written and practical exams by DGCA.
Only then will the DGCA issue your license. Without passing all tests, you can’t become a licensed AME.
AME licenses are the key to becoming a professional aircraft maintenance engineer. They let you work on different types of aircraft systems. Whether it’s mechanical or avionics, each license opens up job opportunities in airlines, MROs, and aviation companies. With good training and effort, this career can be both rewarding and stable.
