The BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology (BSc MLT) is a three or four year undergraduate program that is meant to train students in disease diagnosis via laboratory tests. The duration and curriculum, including internship, differ from country to country and university to university. In India, it is offered as a 3-year course with a 6 months to 1 year internship; whereas other countries might have a 4 year program with practical training. The entire program includes clinical biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, hematology, and diagnostic techniques.
Students train themselves in hospital laboratories, diagnostic centers, and other research institutions. During the final year, students are usually required to undertake internships or clinical rotations. Graduates will find work as medical lab technologists, research aids, or health care administrators. With further training, employment may be obtained in biotechnology companies, forensic laboratories, or blood banks. The higher educational programs are MSc MLT, Ph.D or other discipline medicine. BSc MLT is very marketable in the workforce because the student is assured of getting employment in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, and research institutions, hence it is a very good career option in the medical field.
