Ques: What are the practical training parts of AME B1.2?

The Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) B1.2 Stream is a license based program (approved by Directorate General of Civil Aviation DGCA India) that specializes in maintenance of piston engine aircraft small planes typically used in flying clubs pilot training light commercial operations, or general aviation.

What Practical Training Includes in AME B1.2

In the B1.2 program, practical training is a major part of the curriculum. According to the official syllabus and course description:

Typical hands-on tasks in practical sessions

  • Working on real piston engines: students will disassemble and reassemble piston engines to understand their mechanical components.

  • Compression tests, spark-plug servicing, and ignition system checks basic maintenance tasks needed to ensure engine reliability.

  • Engine ground runs and performance inspections to test engine performance after maintenance and ensure safe operation.

  • Troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical faults: students learn to detect troubleshoot and repair mechanical problems in engine and aircraft systems (fuel hydraulics, etc.).

  • Maintenance of other aircraft systems beyond the engine: this includes fuel systems, hydraulic systems, airframe and structural systems propeller systems and other mechanical systems used in piston engine aircraft.

  • Working in approved maintenance organisations hangars and workshops providing real-world exposure to how maintenance is carried out under regulatory standards.

Why Practical Training Matters

Practical training in AME B1.2 ensures that students do not only learn theory (like aerodynamics, materials, regulations) but also gain hands on experience with real piston engine aircraft. This makes them ready for actual maintenance work for inspection and certification of aircraft and for clearing the DGCA licensing exams. Moreover because piston engine aircraft are often used in training small airlines private flying or general aviation where hands on maintenance must be precise and safe B1.2 training ensures that future AMEs have the right skills precision and safety mindset to keep these aircraft airworthy and safe for flight.
