Rising Demand for Ground Staff in India’s Aviation Industry

Posted on : 1 February, 2026 12:58 pm

1. Aviation Boom and Infrastructure Expansion

India’s aviation industry is rising high —positioned as the world’s third-largest civil aviation market and projected to expand further. Passenger traffic is anticipated to triple to around 960 million by 2033, supported by growing fleets and new airports With operational airports nearly doubling from 74 in 2014 to 157 in 2024, and plans to expand to 350–400 airports by 2047, the demand for all  aviation-related roles—including ground staff—is set to climb.

2. Ground Handling Needs Surge Nationwide

As airport management  expands, especially at regional hubs under the UDAN scheme, ground handling services must scale in tandem. This brings a robust increase in demand for roles such as baggage handlers, ramp agents, passenger service agents, and management  coordinators.

3. Workforce Projections and Skill Gaps

The aviation sector’s workforce is expected to grow from around 250,000 to 350,000 by 2025, though a simultaneous skill shortage—currently at 17%—could swell to 25–30% by year-end. Jobs spanning from pilots to maintenance technicians are already in high demand—but ground staff and operational roles are equally crucial to managing increasing flight volumes and maintaining safety and efficiency standards across airports.

4. Training and Upskilling—A Critical Need

To meet this increasing  demand, investment in ground staff training is vital. Schools, academies, and airport training centers are being integrated across India to provide operations-focused education encompassing baggage handling, safety protocols, and customer service. Initiatives led by AAI, NSDC, and AASSC are bridging gaps through Aviation Skill Centres, degree apprenticeships, and professional training—boosting the readiness of the workforce for ground roles

5. Career Pathways and Opportunities

Ground staff roles are no longer limited to routine tasks. Career paths now include positions like:

  1. Passenger Service Agents
  2. Ramp Agents
  3. Operations Supervisors
  4. Airport Operations Managers
  5. Liaison Officers coordinating airline-ground operations Furthermore, there’s movement towards sustainability, tech integration (like biometric systems), and travel retail growth—all expanding the scope for varied ground staff roles
  6. India’s aviation sector is on a high-growth trajectory, driven by massive infrastructure investments, fleet expansion, regional connectivity, and passenger demand. Ground staff—who ensure seamless, safe airport operations—are emerging as indispensable assets. While demand is set to skyrocket, closing skill gaps through targeted training and strategic recruitment remains crucial. With the right efforts, ground staff careers in India offer both stability and upward mobility in an evolving aviation landscape.
