
India's defense ministry announced an extraordinary milestone - a private company is set to make a military aircraft in India. The project costs ₹21,935 crore and the airplane, named C-295MW, can be used for both military and civilian purposes. Key figures, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia, and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel, will attend an event for this.
Last year, on September 8, the Cabinet Committee on Security approved the purchase of 56 C-295MW transport planes from Airbus Defence and Space S.A., Spain. On September 24, the Ministry of Defence signed an agreement with Airbus for the aircraft and related equipment.
The first 16 aircraft are expected between September 2023 and August 2025, with the first Indian-made plane arriving in September 2026. The C-295MW, with modern technology, will replace the older Avro planes for the Indian Air Force. It has features like a rear ramp door for quick troop and cargo deployment and can take off and land on shorter runways.
The project is a big chance for Indian businesses to step into the competitive aviation industry, aiming to decrease import reliance and boost exports. Most of the work, around 96%, will be done in India, thanks to Tata Consortium. This involves making many parts and assemblies. Airbus will provide systems like engines and avionics.
Once all 56 planes are given to the Indian Air Force, Airbus can sell these Indian-made planes to other countries. The Tata consortium identified over 125 local suppliers, potentially creating many jobs. Around 600 highly skilled jobs and 3 thousands of other employment opportunities are expected in the aerospace and defense sector. Almost 240 engineers will also be trained at Airbus in Spain.
