India is a top-tier market for GE Aerospace, states CEO Vikram Rai. He highlights the need for an extra 130-150 wide-body aircraft to meet the escalating demand.

According to Rai, India has a lot of potential, and local airlines are thinking about getting more big planes to use on busy routes in the country. The airlines in India have ordered nearly 1,500 new planes.

The CEO of GE Aerospace in South Asia, Vikram Rai, said that India is an important market for them. He thinks India's growing aviation industry could benefit from having 130-150 additional large planes as airlines expand. These bigger planes could be used on busy domestic routes, like the one between Delhi and Mumbai.

Right now, India has approximately 700 commercial planes flying, but only about 50 of them are the larger wide-body planes. Air India, which is owned by the Tata Group, has about 49 wide-body planes, and IndiGo has two of these larger planes that they are using through a leasing arrangement.

The current fleet of wide-body aircraft in India would require replacements. Talking about the addition of 130-150 wide-body planes in India, Rai said rising international passengers also bode well for the wide-body segment.

In view of the rising air traffic, the Indian government is also working to build international aviation hubs in India to help domestic carriers fly passengers directly to various overseas destinations. “We have to get to a point where we can get end-to-end carrying our passengers. That is the next step of growth we are talking about,” Rai said.

Even the government has been pushing the Indian carriers to have more wide-body aircraft to pocket a higher share in the long haul segment.
